Rodney's Story

I'm originally from New Zealand but have been living in the Bay for the last 7 years. I have a disability- I'm paraplegic, and I'm homeless and currently living in a shelter. I'm hoping to use HandUp to help with rental assistance, as I'm seeking housing, and technical assistance, in the form of a small laptop, so I can communicate with family back home and access resources that are available for me related to work and financial support.

Since becoming disabled, I've developed a passion for physically integrated dance, which is a contemporary modern style that combines people with and without physical disabilities. I've toured many of the states. I was the first disabled New Zealander to be awarded the Isadora Duncan Dance Award.

    Dearest Donor,

I would like to thank you for your generous support. The support I have received has made the possibility for new beginnings, bringing a heightened sensitivity and care to how I live. I can now see anew, and live more in harmony with the changes life brings, and fulfill my capacity to be fully alive, creative, and responsive. Most recently I have experienced a radical transformation and capacity to pursue my dance career because of your generous contribution. I've been able to get wheelchair repairs done and also travel to and from rehearsals using public transport. Nutrition is very important so I've been able to obtain healthy fruits, vegetables and protein supplements as I'm vegetarian.

There is still a long road ahead and I'm still needing support but I'm focused and committed to finding work and improving my living condition. I'm now living in a stabilization room thanks to the Homeless Outreach Team San Francisco, which is temporary until I can afford to find long term housing.

Thank you wholeheartedly for your deep compassion and please come see one of Dance Performances.

"It is awareness that allows us to deepen in understanding and compassion"
